Functional responses of mangrove fauna to forest degradation

چکیده
Structural degradation of mangroves through the partial removal trees is globally pervasive and likely to affect ecological functioning, including habitat provisioning for biodiversity. Biodiversity responses will depend on severity degradation, yet few studies have contraste quantified several states. Addressing this knowledge gap, we sampled faunal diversity across a range mangrove forests in southern Kenya. Canopy cover was strongest predictor among forest structural variables. Faunal abundance, species richness biodiversity all decreased with reduction canopy cover, taxonomic functional composition changed. The trophic crabs peaked at intermediate degraded habitats having more generalist fewer specialists. Functional redundancy unaffected by thinning. decline brachyuran implies that resource-use efficiency weakens increasing degradation. Our results are indicative significant alterations functioning because epibenthic fauna important regulators ecosystem processes, nutrient cycling carbon.

متن کاملGamebird responses to anthropogenic forest fragmentation and degradation in a southern Amazonian landscape
Although large-bodied tropical forest birds are impacted by both habitat loss and fragmentation, their patterns of habitat occupancy will also depend on the degree of forest habitat disturbance, which may interact synergistically or additively with fragmentation effects. Here, we examine the effects of forest patch and landscape metrics, and levels of forest disturbance on the patterns of persi...
متن کاملScreening for the Total Phenolic Content of Selected Mangrove Species Collected from Sundarban Mangrove Forest
In this present research, acetone extracts of Avicennia alba and Aegialitis rotundifolia were investigated for the estimation of their total phenolic content. The amount of total phenol present was calculated by assaying it with Folin’s Ciocalteau Reagent and spectrophotometric analysis. Gallic acid was taken as the standard compound and the total phenolic content of each of the plant sample wa...

متن کاملConceptualizing Forest Degradation.
Forest degradation is a global environmental issue, but its definition is problematic. Difficulties include choosing appropriate reference states, timescales, thresholds, and forest values. We dispense with many such ambiguities by interpreting forest degradation through the frame of ecological resilience, and with reference to forest dynamics. Specifically, we define forest degradation as a st...
